“Two’s Company Three(s) A Crowd”
Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi: are the 3 potentially infectious micro-organisms that are very important to cosmetologist/nail practitioners. The following articles and publications have helped to bring to the front guidelines and regulations needed for proper hygiene and cleansing practices for, the body.
Nicholas F. Cimaglia, founder of Milady Publishing Company
which he established in 1927. Nick Cimaglia began his career as a salesman for beauty distributors while selling his book “New York State Barber Exam." along with razors, and hair tonic, door to door to the Barbershops. He went on to publish Milady Standard Textbook of Cosmetology in 1938.
Sue E. Samson Executive Director, Arizona State Board of Cosmetology and Mary D. Hudson Office Manager, Arizona State Board of Cosmetology: has dedicated their research on Infection Control threw Principles and Practices. These are highlighted in the latest editions of the “Milady’s Standard Cosmetology ".
Governmental Departments and Regulatory Agencies have been assigned to comply. Any Business servicing the public must follow these rules. We use what is referred to as "Universal Precautions" Every year hundreds and thousands of people are seen in this industry daily. That means; the big three (3) is there as well. That's Right!! You guessed it!! Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi.
A brochure is provided to helps you understand the need to examine this epidemic among our School Children, Senior Citizens, and Homeless Veterans. ( located on the affiliates tab of this website).
Bacteria: are one cell microorganisms with both plant and animal characteristics.
Also known as "Germs". They exist anywhere: on the skin, in water, air, decayed matter, openings for secretion of body, on clothing’s, and beneath nails. There are many kinds of bacteria, but two (2) types.
Non-Pathogenic: Healthy or Harmless; not disease producing, causes help to metabolize foods, protect against infectious micro-organisms, stimulate immune response.
Pathogenic: Harmful or Unhealthy, and although in the minority, disease causing microbes when they invade plant or animal tissue. To this group belongs; "Parasites" which require living matter for growth.
"Parasites” A vegetable or animal micro-organism, that lives on or in another organism and draws it's nourishment from it.
Children's Head Lice: contagious disease and condition. The skin is infested with animal parasites feeding off its prey.
Scabies: These have the same as the head lice except these are itch mites; causing swelling and inflammation, because these parasites bury themselves under the skin's surface.
Classification of Pathogenic Bacteria: they have distinct shape that, help identify them.
Cocci: are round-shaped bacteria that appear along (like a ball, a worm, a single object
Staphylococci: Pus-forming that grows in clusters (like grapes) They cause abscesses, boils.
Streptococci: Pus-forming that grows in curved lines (like a string of beads) They cause infections, strep throat, blood poisoning, tuberculosis.
Diplococcic: Spherical germ that grows in pairs and causes pneumonia
Bacilli: Is short, rod shape germ. They are the most common germ and produce diseases such as lockjaw, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and diphtheria.
Spillia: are spiral or corkscrew-shaped germ, they subdivided into subgroups, which causes syphilis, a sexually transmitted diseases STD or Borrelia Burgdorferi, which causes Lyme disease.
Viruses: Is a submicroscopic structure capable of infesting almost all plants and animals,
Including bacteria. They are so small that they penetrate the pores of porcelain filters.
These are some illnesses associated with Viruses. Common cold, other respiratory, gastrointestinal (digestive tract) infections. Other viruses that plague humans are measles, mumps, chicken pox, smallpox, rabies, yellow fever, hepatitis, polio, influenza, and HIV which causes AIDS.
The difference between viruses and bacteria is that a virus lives only by penetrating cells and becoming part of them, while bacteria are organism that can live on their own.
Hepatitis: a disease marked by inflammation of the, liver is caused by a blood borne virus similar to HIV in transmission. It is more easily contracted than HIV, however, as its present in all body fluids. Three types of hepatitis are of concern to Cosmetologists.
Hepatitis A: This illness usually lasts about three weeks. Symptoms are similar to those of the flu. Adults often have yellowing of skin or eyes. The disease is spread through house hold contact, such as bathroom usage, poor sanitation, and poor personal hygiene, food that's contaminated food, milk, water, shellfish, and infected food handlers, sexual contact.
A vaccine is available.
Hepatitis B (HBV): This illness can cause long-term hepatitis, cirrhosis, and/or liver cancer. About half the people with this disease do not have symptoms, although the illness can mirror the flu. The disease is primarily transferred through sexual contact or parental exposure (piercing mucous membranes or skin barrier) to blood or blood products.
A vaccine is available
Hepatitis C (HCV): This illness can progress slowly and about one third of those with this illness do not have symptoms, though symptoms like can include fatigue and stomach pains. The disease is transferred through parental contact and sexual activity with an infected partner(s). No vaccine available.
Fungi: Vegetable (plant) parasite or fungi, which includes molds, mildews, and yeasts, can produce contagious diseases, such as ringworm and faves, both skin diseases. Finger/Toe Nail fungus can be contracted through implements that have not been disinfected properly or by moisture trapped underneath nail enhancements. Nail fungus is usually CHRONIC (Lingering, long lasting, persistent) and usually localized but, can be spread from client to client. Treatment is usually applied directly to the affected area. In serious cases physician's care is recommended.
